CHAPTER SEVEN
Jana was in the middle of a tutoring session with the girls when she saw Michelle motioning towards the telephone. She knew it had to be an urgent call for the woman to interrupt her.
“Just keep practising until I get back,” she said to the lively bunch as she exited the almost cramped space. She was getting more students of late, and she couldn’t wait to start renovations and to expand the dance rooms. She closed the door behind her and walked rapidly to her office.
“Jana Larson speaking,” she said into the receiver. There was only silence. “Hello?” she called.
“Did I do something to offend you?” he asked her.
“Camdon?” she asked incredibly. “Shouldn’t that be my question?” she asked as she sat down.
“I don’t usually do this,” he said, and she could hear the discomfort in his voice. “I’ve taken a liking to you Jana, but I am not quite ready to go steady with anyone as yet. And that leaves me in quite a quandary.”
“Camdon, you are not the man I thought you were, and from what I’ve seen, you are an amazing man with a big heart. But we are at two different places in life, and on two different streets at that,” she said as she referred to his wealth.
“Does my affluence bother you that much? If you like, I could declare bankruptcy,” he said and grinned sheepishly into the phone. What kind of a suggestion was that? He slapped his hand to his face as the words left his mouth.
Jana laughed. “Don’t be silly,” she said. “You’ve acquired what you have through nothing but hard work. I don’t begrudge that. I’m simply saying regardless of the route, we are still set upon two different paths.”
“I hear you,” he told her. “Well, can I take you to dinner again?”
Jana thought about that long and hard. He was a handsome man, with chiseled features and grey eyes that daggered through any impenetrable chest that refused to acknowledge him, commanding respect and affection. And she was no less enamored than the other women fawning over him, but perhaps unlike the others, she still controlled her sensibilities, and being with a man like Camdon would only bring her pain. The more time she spent with him would make it easier for him to crush her, and she did not have the wherewithal to fend such a blow.
“I don’t think that’s such a good idea,” she said as she blushed and bit her lips. She remembered the way he tasted on her, and she ached for a feel of it, but she had to stand true to her resolve. She could only see Camdon when they had business to conduct, and that business could not be over candlelit dinners and champagne.
Camdon opened his mouth to follow up, but nothing came out. He understood where she was coming from, and he didn’t want to force himself unto her, only to leave her emotionally naked after. He knew he could have her if he wanted to, but he respected her far too much to do otherwise.
